Addition is when 2 or more things are put together to make a new total.
Here we have 1 apple being added to 1 more apple:
So, we get 2 apples in total.
If we used numbers instead, this is what it would look like
To say it in words it is:
What is the total from this addition?
The total for the sum of the apples is:
Now, what is the total from this other addition?
Yes, the total is also 5. This is because addition is commutative, meaning that the order in which the apples (or numbers) are placed does not matter when adding them together.
Subtraction is taking one (or more) number away from another to make a new total.
Here we have 4 apples subtracted by 2:
So, we are left with 2 apples in total.
If we used numbers instead, this is what it would look like
To say it in words it is:
What is the total from this Subtraction?
The total left from the subtraction is:
Now, what is the total from this other subtraction?
The total is -3, because we took away 6 apples when we only had 3 at the start. Unlike addition, the total is not the same as the previous question. This is because subtraction is anticommutative, meaning that changing the order also changes the sign(+/-) of the result.
Multiplication is taking one number and adding the same number to itself by a certain number of times.
The best, fastest, and easiest way to learn to multiply is to memorize the multiplication table!
Here we have 1 apple multiplied by 3:
So, we get 3 apples in total.
If we used numbers instead, this is what it would look like
To say it in words it is:
What is the total from this Multiplication?
The total from this multiplication is:
Now, what is the total from this other Multiplication?
Yes, the total is also 6. Multiplication is also commutative like addition, so the order does not matter and give us the same result.
Division is to separate a number into equal parts.
by dividing we can find out how many of a number is in another number. This is also the opposite of multiplying!
Here we have 8 apples divided by 2:
The answer is 4. Because 4 parts of 2 each give us 8
If we used numbers instead, this is what it would look like
To say it in words it is:
What is the total from this Division?
The total from this Division is:
Now, what is the total from this other Division?
The answer is 1 remainder 2 (or 1.5). This is because division is not always perfect, sometimes you cannot separate things or numbers into equal parts so you are left with a remainder of the items after separating as much as you are able to.
